While "Captain Samuel's Cottage is in 'dry dock' having barnacles removed we have made the building available for up to 4 guests and calling it the "Captain's Abode". Bring another couple and spread out and enjoy the newly renovated spacious living room, kitchen and Bathroom. During 'dry dock' we have set up two double bedrooms, ideal for two couples traveling together. From your living room window enjoy the views towards the river and mountains. Take a short walk through our land to the riverfront, the setting may inspire you to catch an elusive trout, or feed the local ducks. Because of its size we have made it the rate for 4 people.
Interesting History
Early in the 1800’s a wealthy merchant seaman Captain Samuel Horton decided to hang up his sextant and settle in Ross. He became well known for many achievements, one being having a magnificent Methodist college built on his land, naming it after himself, Horton College. He also bought a lovely stone cottage in the main street of Ross. The government had finished using it as a low-security convict barracks. This building, located on the banks of the Macquarie River later became famous as “Captain Samuel’s Cottage” where tourists stay instead of convicts. The cottage has had an interesting history, as well as being a convict barracks, the cottage has been a grindstone shop, butchery, antique shop and private home. Built Circa 1830, it represents one of the oldest buildings in Australia. This cottage has now been restored for visitors from around the world to enjoy its ambiance.
